Visitors' Journal: 2004
The Story Continues.
Last year when the first Journey
Map was introduced you learned
of my move to Nevis in 1999, and
how I fell in love with the island. I
have since entertained at least ten
of my family members and now
they are telling their freiends about
their journey to Nevis.
Whether staying in my home near
Brown Pasture village or at various
lovely hotels, resorts or guest houses,
each experience is unique and
different and everyone's perception
of Nevis is tinted by his or her
different surroundings. The common
denominator is that irresistibly warm
Nevisian smile.
The following journal entries capture
the flavor of our visit.

Arrival
Returning to Nevis refreshes island
memories and awakens that inquisitive
barefoot child again. First stop, Cotton
Ground for fresh fruit drinks and a
veggie roti at Natural Livity.
There's that mountain - this trip- it's
time to climb the peak. But only after
breakfast a la sunrise. Dawn is never
this dramatic back home... the colors
of a new sunrise blend with those of
the rainforest as the sun's first finger-tips
grasp the eastern face of the volcano
... painting a hot rosy green glow.
Afternoon.
Mamie, Richard, Sheila, Gus, Ruby
and I relaxed on the beach under an
umbrella - soaking up the warmth
and calm of the light aqua sea.
The gentle water and cooling breeze
quieted the busy voice inside my head
and soothed away the worries of my
distant hectic world. If only Nevis could
be bottled up and taken home...
Dinner at Cla-Cha-Del for local
flavor tannia fritters, and a
Pas-mixed drink.

Sunday
Good morning! Time for the beach
and an afternoon drive with Mom
to Newcastle.
Evening.
Today we discovered what some
lucky people call home - for several
months of the year. The
condos at Mount Nevis Hotel are
luxurious, spacious and comfortable.
Afterwards Marion, with her signature
smile, seated us by the poolside terrace
overlooking the Caribbean Sea
where we toasted the day goodbye
with icy cocktails under a fiery
orange sky.
Monday
Spent the afternoon on the sea
between Nevis and St. Kitts. We
joined a fun group and headed
out with Captain Lennox on the
Caona catamaran. The breezy
weather and the clear water were
ideal for exploring the shoreline
reefs and coral treasures.
I remembered to not wear my
favorite hat... Captain won't turn
around for breeze-snapped caps.
We raise a toast to the attentive
crew. Even little Ruby had a good time.

Tuesday
Tonight we went by the Montpelier
Inn. Remembering we had such an amazing
visit there last year, we were pleasantly
surprised to see that same smiling faces.
This year it was only better. Chef Mark
Roberts, had us smiling from ear to ear
and sailing to far off places as we dined.
Wednesday
Stedroy Dore, of Smile on Me taxi
took us on an art discovery tour: the
Parrys in Hamilton The Eva Wilkin
Gallery in Clay Ghaut, Chickee's
Furniture Factory on Hanley's Road,
Kennedy's Hand Craft Center in Zion,
Newcastle Pottery, and in Charlestown,
to the Craft House, the Nevis Gallery
of Art, and Cafe Des Arts.

Thursday
June from El-J's in Stoney Grove
made pot-fish and eggplant
casserole for lunch and Major
brought "jelly water" to mix drinks.
Then we were off for the short
hike to see views of Antigua and
Montserrat from Herbert's Heights
in upper Rawlins.
It was so clear and the peak looked
so close - and its thick greenery
was cooling and fragrant. We
swang on the merry-go-round swings
before hiking down the butterfly-
speckled pathway.
Friday
Morning.
Woke up to a surprise massage by
Martha Hart Honders. An extra
special treat when comes with her
table!
Afternoon.
On Pump Road across the street
from the Water Department, is a
barbecue every Friday where
everyone goes to claim their chicken
or ribs, listen to DJ Jez, hang out with
friends and play dominos. It's just
down the street from Boko Park where
the Willett and Wallace families
and friends play neighborhood cricket.
Elquemedo Willett, the first Leeward
Islander to play for the West Indies
team has two sons now on the senior
Nevis team; Tonito and this year, Akito,
joins him at age 14.
-Mamie
Saturday
Tonite, Bananas.
Just the girls ... or maybe, the girls
the girls and Duane.
We sat inside on the cozy corner
couch while others sat on the terrace
where the view of St. Kitts
is fabulous. That was fine with
Ophelia, who tended to our every
request with her distinctive grace.
Keith mixed yummy cocktails. As we
nearly finished diner Livia and Duane
joined us for more fun, then we
retired to the inn, full, happy and
sleepy.
